The Scene: Los Angeles designer M'backe Seye recently hosted his fourth-annual Defal Sa Walle fashion event to raise money to fight malaria in Africa.
“Defal Sa Walle” means “do your part” in the Senegalese language of wolof, according to the Senegal–born designer, whose fashion training and career took him to Paris and Montreal before he settled in Los Angeles. The designer showed a collection of current and archival.
In 2006, the designer kicked off his fashion fundraiser to raise awareness about the threat malaria poses to Africans, particularly children and pregnant women. The disease, which is spread through the bite of infected mosquitoes, kills 1.3 million people worldwide annually, the vast majority—85 percent—in Africa. The best defense against malaria is to sleep under an insecticide-treated mosquito net. UNICEF and other charitable organizations help raise funds to purchase mosquito nets for African families, at a cost of about $9 each.
“I believe one day people will realize for $9 you can sale a child, Seye said. “Malaria kills a lot of mothers and children every day. Please help the children in Africa.”
Seye said he holds to continue to host his fundraiser and plans to continue to raise money to assist in the fight against malaria. He created a Defal Sa Walle T-shirt, which is available for sale on his Web site (http://defalsawalle.com), where he also accepts donations for the cause.
“This is our fourth year,” said Seye. “I hope to continue in 2010, 2020, whatever.” —Alison A. Nieder
